Modernized and Innovative User Experience Strategies for Established Businesses

Author - Aniket Dhok (UX Lead).

Change is inevitable, especially in today’s fast-paced world, rather it is unavoidable. Working with one of the biggest organizations in the world taught us that even those entities that are well-established need to evolve to accommodate contemporary methods of streamlining procedures.

Every business comes with its own set of unique challenges in terms of UX Design. Designers strive to create user-centric experiences, but they often encounter situations where there is no design reference or established best practices. Instead, they rely on user empathy and creative problem-solving to navigate uncharted territories. Moreover, when it comes to satisfying goals, business goals are often prioritized over user goals. By maintaining a smooth learning curve, and leveraging familiar elements, we explored the importance of considering the bigger picture to achieve a successful balance between user and business needs.

Challenges in Transforming User Experience in Mature Organizations
Lack of Design Reference

When it comes to frequently observed business problems, there are many established solutions and design references available, and designers all over the world have done extensive research on them. However, in the matter of very specific business needs, designers often encounter situations where there are neither design references nor solutions already in place. Even when an organization lacks the right guidelines for design, a designer still needs to develop a design system in order to implement a contemporary web solution. There, designers must rely on their imagination, user research, empathy for the user, and comprehension of the needs of the target audience. Designers can gain insightful knowledge and develop cutting-edge solutions specifically suited to the current business issue by thoroughly knowing the users and placing themselves in their shoes.

No App or Web Solution for Competitive Analysis

An important step in the design process is doing a competitive analysis. However, it is not possible always for an app or product to exist to contrast and draw lessons from. Finding a design direction that stands out in the market is now even more difficult. Designers must perform extensive research, investigate market trends, and find loopholes that might be exploited to gain a competitive edge in the absence of a clear benchmark. Designers may create distinctive experiences that captivate consumers and achieve the objectives of the organization by concentrating on user wants and comprehending what differentiates the company.

Stakeholder Business Goals vs. User Goals

Though user-centric design is a fundamental principle, it is important to understand that stakeholder business goals are also very significant. A company must eventually be profitable in order to survive and keep offering value to its customers. As a result, user goals are frequently given less priority than the achievement of shareholder business goals. Design professionals must coordinate their work with the organization’s overarching business plan to make sure that the user experience advances and advances the organization’s wider goals. Designers may produce experiences that not only satisfy user demands but also help businesses achieve their goals by achieving a balance between user success and business success.

The Difference Between UX for User and UX for Business

The term “user experience” (UX) refers to both how a user interacts with a product and how that engagement affects the business. While user-focused UX designs take into account how users interact with products and the “happy path” while designing for user delight, UX for business additionally takes into account the organization as a whole. Included in this are elements like Conversion Rates, Client Retention, and Revenue Generation. Designers must take into account a broad picture and create user experiences that not only satisfy users but also help businesses achieve goals. Designers can create experiences that benefit both sides by recognizing the relationship between UX and commercial outcomes.

Revamping User Experience in Established Companies

For the last 20 years, the organization’s traditional users had relied on traditional processes to do their everyday tasks. A significant change for them was introducing a freshly curated solution. Our initial discussions with these consumers helped us gain an important understanding of their expectations and concerns. We got to recognize that the project’s success relied on striking a balance between the business goals set by the leadership team and the user experience of those who would be using the application.

We absorbed that drastic alterations may cause disagreement and prevent user adoption. We tackled this by incorporating established elements from the users’ existing processes into the newly developed web solution. We managed to put all the data on a single web page and replaced the traditional 35-40 slides of PPT they were using every month to present the data. This helped consumers to transition smoothly and increased the speed of work with more accuracy.

It was interesting to observe how different experienced groups of customers responded to the new product design. While new-age users immediately embraced the change, the legacy users required more time to adapt. However, once they recognized the simplified workflow and its benefits, they warmly welcomed the innovative design. This experience reinforced the importance of considering user demographics when introducing transformative solutions.

Solutions for Enhancing User Experience for Traditional Organizations

The execution and the process of adapting UX design for long-standing companies like this one not only improved the organization’s workflow but also refined its operations. The company saw a huge increase in productivity as a result of getting rid of outdated methods, which opened the door for further development. The UX solution’s adaptability assured that it could handle any future development, too. The organization is on a road of expansion and adaptability thanks to the enthusiastic response from business leaders and users, who also acknowledged the workflows’ simplification and increased efficiency. In today’s dynamic environment, embracing change and respecting the user experience is crucial for enabling organizations to succeed even in the face of rooted traditions.
